Ms. O's Message
Dear Quetzal Families,
February is African-American History Month. Join us in paying tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggle with adversity to achieve equity, full recognition and reach their goals in our American society. As we start this new month and celebrate all African Americans, let’s remember the important values of equity and equality. it’s very important to emphasize the difference between them. Although both promote fairness, equality achieves this through treating everyone the same regardless of need, while equity achieves this through treating people differently depending on need. In education, it’s important to continue modeling expected behaviors, so let us purposely continue to model equality and equity to our children.
This week, let’s remember one of my favorite players, Kobe Bryant. He once said, “Have a good life. Life is too short to get bogged down and be discouraged. You have to keep moving. You have to keep going. Put one foot in front of the other, smile, and just keep rolling.” He will forever be remembered and greatly missed. Like Kobe, so many other African Americans have made an impact in our lives and in history. Let’s never forget!
Please join us tomorrow, Thursday 28 for our ELAC (English Language Advisory Committee) and SSC (School Site Council) meeting. Please register on the links provided below. We will talk about LCAP (Local Control and Accountability Plan) as well as ELPAC (English Language Proficiency Assessments for California) and reclassification of English Learners. I want to invite you to participate as a candidate for School Site Council president as our Trustee, Laura Berman, steps down from her role. We want to thank her for her leadership and participation in this important position.
Have a fantastic rest of the week and remember to practice social distancing, wearing a mask, and washing your hands. We want and need you all safe and healthy!
Parents: We want to hear from you! LCAP survey
The District is beginning its annual process of writing the LCAP (Local Control Accountability Plan). Your input from the survey will guide the development of our District’s three-year plan that will correspond with the first three years of the District’s new Strategic Plan 2027. These documents are the blueprints that guide all of the District’s work for the benefit of our students.
Parents, we want to hear from you: Please click here - http://mvw.sd/ParentLCAP - to give input through February 12 in a survey. We recognize that the wording of some of these questions might seem a little awkward because we are in a pandemic, distance-learning year. Please answer as fully as you can based on the experiences you've had this school year. If you would like a paper copy, please call the school office (650) 526-3575
Please look for a meeting at your school to learn more about the LCAP/Strategic Plan process. Our school meetings are below

Better Together: Poverty in America Awareness
January is Poverty in America Awareness Month and in the time of Covid-19 and the economic fallout, talking about issues surrounding poverty has never been more important. Words matter and our students know more than we often give them credit for. Talking about poverty with kids is not only possible, it's important. Explore the resources provided in this infographic (attached or viewable at https://www.mvwsd.org/bettertogetherMVWSD) to find an approach to talking about poverty that is most appropriate for your student(s). Ultimately, your conversations should reinforce that when it comes to making a difference in the world and caring for others in our community, we are #BetterTogether.
