From Ms. O's Desk
Dear Quetzal Families,
Happy Mother's Day to all the great parents in our community! I wish you all a loving, safe, and happy day. I also want to take the time to thank you for your existence and for being such an amazing part of our community. Here are a few facts on Mother's Day. Did you know that...?
- The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914.
- Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar.
- While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day traditionally involves presenting moms with flowers, cards and gifts.
- Celebrations of motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”
- More phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year. These holiday chats with Mom often cause phone traffic to spike by as much as 37 percent.
While versions of Mother’s Day are celebrated worldwide, traditions vary depending on the country. In Thailand, for example, Mother’s Day is always celebrated in August on the birthday of the current queen, Sirikit.
In the United States, Mother’s Day continues to be celebrated by presenting mothers and other women with gifts and flowers, and it has become one of the biggest holidays for consumer spending.
In Ethiopia, families gather each fall to sing songs and eat a large feast as part of Antrosht, a multi-day celebration honoring motherhood.
Let's give our moms a break this Sunday! Pamper them, make them breakfast, clean your bedrooms, and remind them how much you love them...there is so much more to give that costs so little of us! Have a great day!
We are coming to the end of 3rd through 5th grade state testing. Thank you for helping us support our students on this tasks. I have had the opportunity to proctor tests these last two weeks, and I have been well pleased to see our students working hard and giving their best! I am so proud!
Stay safe and healthy! Don't bring your guard down and continue to wear a mask indoors. We have come so far, and we are so close to the end of the school year!
Respectfully,
Ms. Olaciregui, Principal
