Arts for Everyone!

The arts are a vehicle for creative expression and social interaction in ALL kids. The arts are linked to academic achievement as well as social and emotional development. In this forum we will explore the various arts opportunities in our community. We’ll hear from Youth Drama for All (in their 10th year of productions), Dance for ALL (a YMCA based community class), and other local arts groups.

Marcus Shelby Trio

Thursday, April 20, 2017

The Marcus Shelby Trio presents “Blues and the Pursuit of Freedom,” a history of African American music told through blues, spirituals, field hollers, work songs, swing, and popular music. Live performance, history, poetry and field recordings combine to inspire students while they learn the importance of African American music as a tool for various freedom movements in the United States.

Shelby is currently the Artistic Director and leader of The Marcus Shelby Orchestra. Shelby is very active in music education and currently teaches at Rooftop Alternative School in San Francisco and the Stanford Jazz Workshop at Stanford University. Shelby also has led many of the San Francisco Jazz Festival Family Matinee Concerts. In March 2013, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee appointed Shelby to the San Francisco Arts Commission.

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day

The national “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” is Thursday, April 27. Many local companies plan events during school hours on this week.

In addition to missing important instructional time, please be aware that this is an unexcused absence for your child (Excused absences are determined by the state: They are illness, doctor’s appointments, bereavement, and certain religious exercises). Also, this day falls during the state testing period. Students absent during testing will be asked to make up tests upon their return to school.

We understand that is a great opportunity for your child to see the types of work you and your company do.  Because of the conflict, we will be working with our corporate sponsors to explore other dates and times that are not as disruptive to the instructional day. Thank you for your understanding and support.
