Principal Message May 17, 2017

Research tells us that when students don’t read for two months their skills regress.  Reading is a skill which requires practice, just like baseball or math facts.  Summer reading helps students of all ages keep their skills sharp so they are ready when school begins again in the fall. Reading throughout the summer not only enhances basic reading skills of young students, it creates unique opportunities for learning, exploring, and growing.  On Thursday we will have a short assembly to kick off our Quetzales Soar into Summer Reading Challenge.  Be on the lookout for more details about how your child can keep up their reading skills and Soar into Summer Reading.  Next September, we will have a special recognition assembly and celebration for all students who participate in the summer reading challenge.

Spanish Reading Tool!

I am excited to share that we are providing students access to a new online Spanish reading tool.  Currently we are evaluating the product, Istation Español, as part of a before and after school intervention class at Mistral.  We have selected a small group of students in 1st and 2nd grade whose families have given permission to participate in our intervention program.  The great news is that the program is free to our school and accessible to all of our students K-5 through July 31st.  Students who are not part of the before or after school intervention must complete the Spanish ISIP placement test at school before having access off campus.  Upon completion, students will be placed at the appropriate level and able to begin a lesson in the system.  Below you will find instructions on how to download the app if you would like your child to use the program at home.  Your child will login using their Google school username and password.  The iStation Español program will be available to students until 7/31/2017.

Fidget Spinners Not Allowed On Campus

Fidget spinners have become extremely popular. So popular, in fact, they are now causing problems here at school. They have become a disruption in the classroom therefore, FIDGET SPINNERS ARE NO LONGER ALLOWED AT MISTRAL SCHOOL. Please leave them at home. They cannot be in desks, backpacks, pockets, or anywhere else at school. They will be confiscated. If students need a fidget to concentrate, and this is part of their IEP or 504 the school will provide one of a different variety.
